Canadian mining company loses authority over African location

(MENAFN) The Eastern Cape provincial government has confirmed that 80 victims of the recent catastrophic floods have been identified. The severe weather caused widespread damage across the province, particularly affecting households, displacing families, and disrupting livelihoods in the O.R. Tambo and Amathole District Municipalities.

The death toll has reached 90, with 60 adults and 30 children among the deceased. Of those who died, 48 were men and 42 were women. The Department of Health has completed post-mortems on 80 bodies, all positively identified, and 77 have been returned to their families.

Provincial spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie said the government is maintaining close contact with the affected families, providing essential aid and psychological support. The Council of Churches has also been involved, offering spiritual comfort to those grieving.

Emergency relief efforts continue, with approximately 2,686 displaced residents currently housed in shelters, receiving three meals daily and necessary supplies. Progress has been made in restoring basic services, particularly water, though some communities still face limited access. Residents are urged to use water carefully as full restoration will take time.

Water tankers operated by local municipalities, the Department of Water and Sanitation, and the charity Gift of the Givers continue to supply affected areas.

A Provincial Day of Mourning will be held on June 19, 2025, in Decoligny Village, Mthatha. Authorities ask residents to report any missing persons from the severe weather events around June 10 to aid ongoing rescue operations.

The provincial government also calls on the private sector, businesses, and the public to donate food, clothing, blankets, furniture, and other essential items to support those affected.
